Most Common Driveway Issues in Harrisburg

There are a handful of common issues that we see manifest when evaluating driveways in Harrisburg, PA. When dealing with Harrisburg’s sub-base, soil composition, weather, and traffic wearing, certain points of damage are common. After 29 years of paving driveways in Harrisburg, we’ve seen it all and know how to fix these common driveways issues. Oftentimes, a damaged driveway in Harrisburg will show signs of,

  • Linear cracks
  • Radial (aka ‘spiderweb’) cracks
  • Sinking at the entrance of the garage
  • Rutting
  • Cracked edged of driveway
  • Sinkholes
  • Snow plow scratches
  • Retaining water puddles

Repairing a Cracked Driveway

Linear Cracks:

When you have cracks going, mostly, in straight lines (unlike the picture to the left) this is referred to as “linear cracks”. These are typically caused by normal wear and tear, but could be the result of a sub-base issues. To amend these types of cracks, there are a few options. The most-affordable option is also the most temporary option –  ‘crack-fill’. This involves injecting an adhesive sealant in the crack. Again, although it tends to be more affordable, the cracks will likely continue to separate and need repaired every few years. Ideally, the area with cracks would be saw-cut and excavated. From there, the sub-base can be addressed, new asphalt installed, and the edges of the patch sealed with asphalt tape.

Radial Cracks:

If your driveway cracks are spread out in a spiderweb pattern, those are referred to as ‘radial’ cracks. These are caused, typically, by an issue at the sub-base level or from heavily-damaged asphalt. Unfortunately, these cracks are harder to fix than linear cracks. Radial cracks tend to spread out further, so finding a clean cut-off point to patch can be difficult but not impossible. For that reason, depending on the size, we would likely try to patch the area. If the driveway is completely covered in radial cracks, replacement may be the correct solution. Crack-sealing is not recommended in any capacity. Call our office to schedule an appointment with one of our estimators to properly determine the best solution if you have a cracked driveway in Harrisburg.

Cracked Driveway Edges:

Oftentimes, driveways will develop cracking along the edge of the asphalt. This is often caused by one of the following, either: improperly installed asphalt OR the driveway was driven over before it had time to fully cure (roughly 18 months). If a small area is cracked, we can often patch that area. However, if the whole edge of the driveway is cracking, it doesn’t always look great to have a long patch along the whole edge. For this reason, we would either saw-cut the edge clean, install a roll curb on top of the existing edge, or resurface/replace the driveway (typically only if other issues are present).

Other Common Asphalt Driveway Issues

Sinking at Garage:

One of the most common driveway issues in Harrisburg is sinking at the entrance to the garage (where the asphalt and garage meet). Many of the customers we talk to each year have this dilemma, making it difficult to drive in and out of the garage. This is typically caused from building’s contractor being unable to compact the stone base of the driveway upon installing it (due to the freshly built foundation). We can easily patch the driveway entrance, solving the sub-base issue and raising the grade to make the asphalt flush with the garage floor.

Driveway Rutting:

After time or heavy use, some asphalt driveways in Harrisburg may develop ruts. Typically these low points of the driveway follow the wheel outline of a vehicle. These ruts can often hold water and get worse over time. Three common causes for ruts or low points in your asphalt driveway are;

1. Using vehicles too heavy for the asphalt type

2. Insufficient depth of asphalt pavement

3. Sub-base issues (erosion, lack of stone, uncompacted area)

Like most issues, the solution depends on the severity. If you have a small area of rutting, then we can likely use a patch. However, if the entire lane of your driveway is rutting, we likely will need to replace the area.

Sinkholes:

There are many causes of sinkholes including erosion of base material, decaying roots from trees, or other sub-base issues. Sinkholes can often be fixed by removing the asphalt, digging out the base material, recompacting the sub-base, installing new stone and asphalt, and sealing the patch area.
