Asphalt Mixes

9.5mm Asphalt Mix

This wearing course asphalt mix can be used on a variety of projects. It works well individually or layered with a base course asphalt for added strength. The name “9.5mm” refers to the size of the largest stone in the mix, which measures approximately 3/8”. This smaller stone size provides the asphalt with a smooth, polished finish, delivering excellent weather resistance.

CPA Pavement Services, typically, recommends a 2.5” compacted thickness for new, residential paving surfaces to ensure durability and performance. This mix is ideal for roads, driveways, walking lanes, and more.

Commonly referred to as wearing course, top course, and ID-2 wearing.

19mm Asphalt Mix

Another wearing course option, 19mm asphalt, provides greater strength compared to 9.5mm. Its larger aggregates, measuring 19mm (¾”), contribute to its enhanced durability and resilience. Because of the larger stone size, this mix does not achieve a perfectly tight, polished appearance, making it less suitable for driveway surfaces.

Instead, 19mm asphalt excels in heavy-use applications and rural lanes where durability is more critical than aesthetics. Additionally, it is often a more economical blacktop option, offering a cost-effective solution for projects that prioritize strength and practicality.

Commonly referred to as ID-3.

25mm Asphalt Mix

Depending on your project, a multi-stage asphalt application might be necessary to achieve the best results. In such cases, 25mm asphalt serves as an excellent binder material, making it ideal for use as a base layer. Once the binder is in place, a wearing course can be applied on top to enhance both the strength and appearance of the surface.

With aggregate sizes reaching up to 1”, 25mm asphalt contains the largest stones among these three mixes. This larger stone size provides exceptional durability and stability, making it a reliable foundation for high-traffic areas or heavy-use projects.

Commonly referred to as base and BCBC.

Sealcoat Materials

Coal Tar Sealcoat

Coal tar sealcoat is a durable, chemical-resistant protective layer applied to asphalt surfaces. Made from refined coal tar, it offers exceptional resistance to harsh elements like UV rays, oil, gasoline, and road salts. This long-lasting sealer is ideal for high-traffic areas or driveways prone to chemical exposure, providing a hard, glossy finish that keeps asphalt looking new. However, its strong odor and higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) make it less eco-friendly than other options.

Asphalt-Based Sealcoat

Considered an eco-friendly alternative to coal tar sealers, asphalt-based sealcoat is made primarily from asphalt emulsions. Known for its flexibility, it resists cracking and blends seamlessly with the natural appearance of asphalt. This sealer offers excellent protection against weather damage and UV rays but is less resistant to chemical spills like oil or gasoline. With lower VOC emissions and a milder odor, asphalt-based sealcoat is a great choice for homeowners seeking an environmentally conscious option for driveway maintenance.
